This video tells the story of Napoleon Bonaparte — the boy from Corsica who could barely speak French, who arrived at a military school speaking with an accent his classmates mocked, and who within thirty years had made himself master of the most powerful empire the Western world had seen since Rome. The France that produced him was a country tearing itself apart: the old regime collapsing under the weight of its own debt and injustice, the Revolution consuming its own in the Terror, the armies of a new republic fighting the rest of Europe to a standstill. Napoleon found his moment at Toulon in 1793, where a twenty-four-year-old artillery captain saw what no one else had seen, seized a promontory that forced the British fleet to withdraw, and was promoted to brigadier general. Three years later he was commanding the Army of Italy — a starving, demoralized force that its previous commanders had failed to move — and within weeks he had launched a campaign that separated the Austrian and Piedmontese armies, won four battles, and changed the shape of the war. What Napoleon brought to the battlefields of Europe was not simply audacity. It was a way of thinking about conflict that his opponents took years to recognize and never fully countered. Concentration of force at the decisive point. Speed of movement that outran the enemy's ability to respond. The corps system that gave French armies an operational flexibility no other force possessed. The ability to read a battlefield in real time and commit without certainty — to act on incomplete information faster than the enemy could react. Austerlitz in December 1805 was his masterpiece: he feigned weakness on his right to invite the allied attack, stripped the Pratzen Heights the Allies had abandoned, sent Soult's corps up in the morning fog, split the allied army in two, and destroyed a force that had come to destroy him. #HistoryForSleep #DriftThroughHistory #Napoleon #FrenchHistory #NapoleonicWars
