This video tells the story of Sun Tzu — the name, the mystery, and the thirteen chapters of compressed strategic thought that have outlasted every army, every dynasty, and every political order that has existed in the twenty-five centuries since they were written. The world that produced him was the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, a civilization in collapse: the Zhou Dynasty kings still reigned in name while dozens of competing states fought each other with escalating ruthlessness, the old chivalric conventions of warfare giving way to something more total, more expensive, and more desperate. Into this world came a man the tradition calls Sun Wu — probably from the state of Qi, probably a figure of military genius, certainly connected to the text that bears his name — who found his way to the rising coastal state of Wu and entered the service of its king through the sponsorship of Wu Zixu, the great revenge-driven statesman whose own story reads like a Greek tragedy.
The history of the state of Wu is also the history of what the text cannot do alone. Sun Tzu helped make Wu capable of things that seemed impossible — the sack of Chu's capital Ying in 506 BCE with a force outnumbered perhaps ten to one, one of the greatest military upsets of the age. But Wu's political structures could not sustain what its generals had built. Wu Zixu was ordered to commit suicide by a king too proud to hear warnings. Goujian of Yue spent twenty years sleeping on brushwood and tasting gall, rebuilding, waiting. The patience won. Wu ceased to exist. The text remained.
This gentle bedtime history explores Sun Tzu as a story of intelligence, patience, principle, and the permanent structure of conflict.
