For 30 years, William Randolph Hearst loved another woman in public, a showgirl 34 years his junior, and installed her as queen of his California castle while his wife kept New York. A vaudeville dancer he plucked from a Broadway chorus line when she was 14, she refused for decades to grant him a divorce, held the one thing his mistress never could, the legal name, and built an empire of her own that no crash could foreclose, the Free Milk Fund for Babies. When Hearst died in 1951, his will tried to hand control of the entire corporation to his mistress.
