What if you could hear 100 times better? A whisper sounds like a conversation. Traffic sounds like a rock concert. You can hear your friend's heartbeat, a loose bolt from the sidewalk, and the mouse inside your wall at 3 a.m.
It's amazing... until New Year's Eve, when your little sister disappears into a crowd of fifty thousand people, eight minutes before the loudest moment of the year. There's only one way to find her.
This is Part 1.

Science notes: at the quietest sound you can hear, your eardrum moves less than the width of a single atom. Every +10 decibels is ten times more sound energy, so hearing 100x more sensitive is +20 dB on everything. The "cocktail party effect" (your brain picking one voice out of a noisy room) was first studied by the scientist Colin Cherry in 1953. Barn owls can catch prey in total darkness by sound alone, dogs hear about twice as high as we do, and some bats hear above 100,000 Hz. Hyperacusis is a real condition where everyday sounds feel painfully loud, and in the quietest rooms on Earth people can hear their own heartbeat.
