There is a sticker on your windshield that tells you when to come back for an oil change, and for most drivers it says 3,000 miles. Retired mechanic Mateo Salazar shows where that number really came from, and why most new cars call for 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000 miles in the owner's manual instead. Mateo counts down nine items on a typical maintenance bill and the old shop method that cuts each one: the battery test that comes free with an oil change, the engine air filter and cabin air filter you can change yourself in five minutes, the engine flush Chrysler warned against in its own service bulletin, the fluid "wallet flush", and the cup of dark fluid held up in the waiting room. You will learn why brake fluid color tells you very little, and how a cheap test strip measures copper and water instead. He also gives the quick-lube industry its honest case: the severe service schedule in your book, which AAA found most drivers qualify for without knowing it. Then he explains the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, why doing your own maintenance cannot void your warranty, and why your receipts matter. At the end, Mateo works the arithmetic on one car driven 15,000 miles a year: 790 dollars on the sticker schedule against 205 dollars following the owner's manual, and 295 dollars even on the severe schedule.
