Follow me on LinkedIn:   / leo-cui-ph-d-cfa-59531439   I am a venture capital investor at FoundersX Ventures, an AI and deep-tech VC fund based in Menlo Park, Cambridge and NYC. I previously did my Ph.D. at Harvard, postdoc at MIT. All infographics and the full presentation from this video are available to download for Research tier members — plus members get every new video before it's released to the public. --- SpaceX has built something no rocket company ever managed: an industrial machine that finances its own next version. Rockets launch satellites. Satellites sell subscriptions to 12 million customers. Subscriptions pay for bigger rockets. That flywheel already works — Starlink generated $11.4 billion in revenue last year at a real operating profit. But SpaceX is now asking investors to fund a second story: a merger with xAI, data centers drawing hundreds of megawatts, a challenge to the phone carriers, the largest rocket ever built — and eventually, AI data centers in orbit. Some of that future is under construction. Some depends on engineering no one has demonstrated. And some exists only in filings. In this video, I separate the machine that already works from the future investors are being asked to finance — layer by layer, with the numbers from SpaceX's first quarterly report as a public company. You'll learn: How SpaceX nearly died in 2008 — and what the $1.6B NASA contract actually saved Why landing the booster solved only half the problem How $/kg to orbit fell from the Shuttle era to roughly $2,700 Why SpaceX had to build its own customer — and how Starlink's LEO constellation actually works The carrier turn: why T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon should be paying attention What Starlink really earns — revenue, operating profit, and growth by segment Why Starship and orbital refueling are the bottleneck for everything that comes next Inside the xAI merger: Grok, X, Cursor, and Colossus's 220,000+ GPUs The four-step AI strategy — sell the compute, own the interface, own the inputs, move to orbit Orbital data centers: what's real, what's proposed, and what's still just physics The bull case, the bear case, and the specific numbers to watch from here Companies discussed include SpaceX, Starlink, xAI, X, Tesla, NASA, Boeing, Blue Origin, Amazon (Project Kuiper), Viasat, HughesNet, EchoStar, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, AST SpaceMobile, NVIDIA, Google, and many more. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Cold Open — The Machine That Finances Itself 0:46 The Map — Four Layers of SpaceX 2:13 Act 1 — The Last Rocket (2008) 4:05 Act 2 — Reuse Solved Only Half the Problem 07:00 Act 3 — SpaceX Builds Something to Launch (Starlink) 14:41 Act 4 — When a Business Becomes Infrastructure 17:40 Act 5 — The Machine, and the Part That Is Missing 18:49 Act 6 — Starship Is the Bottleneck 22:13 Act 7 — Building a Second Flywheel (xAI & Grok) 30:27 The Scorecard — What Makes Money, What Loses It 33:26 Bull vs. Bear 37:06 What to Watch 39:14 Return to the Map 41:09 Close This video is part of my Watch Before Investing series, where I break down complicated technology companies and investment themes for viewers without a technical background.
