The West Market, locally known as "Tua-tshai-tshi" (Main Food Market), is located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan. As one of the largest commercial facilities for wholesale food trading during the Japanese governance period, the building holds significant historical importance in Tainan's urban development.
Originally constructed in 1905 (Meiji 38) as a wooden structure, the market collapsed due to a typhoon that struck southern Taiwan in 1911. Rebuilt in 1912 (Taisho 1) as an L-shaped reinforced concrete building, that structure forms the main body seen today. The market continued to operate in the post-war era. However, it gradually declined due to urban redevelopment and the Haian Road Underground Street construction project in the 1990s—which led to the decline of the surrounding commercial district—as well as insufficient space for growing food trade volumes, which forced wholesale market operations to relocate elsewhere.
On May 12, 2003, the West Market was designated a municipal monument of Tainan City. The designated historic site encompasses the main building of the West Market, the outer shops (Phase II), the fish market building, the cold storage facility of the former Niitaka Sugar Co., Ltd., and the banana warehouse of the former Tainan Prefecture Fruits and Vegetables Trade Association.
