In the spring of 1959, the feed store in Marion told my daddy that from then on, our chicken feed would come in paper bags. The last printed sack that ever came home to our farm had little bluebirds on white, and my mother folded it into her bottom drawer and wouldn't let anybody touch it for two years. I'm Hazel, I'm 84, and tonight I'm telling you twenty-five things a feed sack did on our Kansas farm before it ever got near a quilt, from the water jug in the wheat harvest to the blue robe I wore as Mary in our country school's Christmas program. Stay for number one, because I know exactly what she made with that last sack, and it's still being worn.
