Its history goes back to around 3600–3300 BCE, making its earliest settlement older than the famous urban centres of the mature Indus civilization. Unlike Mohenjo-daro, Amri began as an early local cultural settlement known for its distinctive pottery and way of life. Over time, Harappan cultural influences reached Amri, and the settlement eventually became part of the wider Harappan cultural world. Archaeological excavations have revealed houses, pottery, tools and other remains that provide a glimpse into the lives of people who lived here thousands of years ago. The Indus River was an important part of this landscape, supporting fishing, settlement and other activities. One of the most dramatic chapters in Amri's history is evidence of widespread burning at the site during the third millennium BCE. The settlement was ultimately abandoned, leaving behind archaeological remains that still tell the story of a changing civilization.
