The bakery is shut, and Lotte takes the heiress on a tour of her town: the square with the church, the town hall and the bank on its corner, the bridge over the little river, the crossing with its signpost, and the cemetery at the edge of the fields, where every Ahrens lies — except Hilde. She is buried somewhere in the city, and nobody in town will say why. In the afternoon the last stop: a small house in a street behind the square, dark since July, a jar of jam still on the kitchen table, a photograph behind every door. Nora takes out her keys. The third key fits. She does not open the door.
