Covering nearly 5,000 square metres, it sells vegetables, fruit, meat, seafood, staple foods, dried goods and everyday household items. This is not a tourist attraction. It is a neighbourhood market where local residents buy breakfast, choose ingredients for the day and carry their groceries home. By 11:30, the market is approaching closing time, and many vendors begin packing up their stalls. Beyond the Forbidden City, Tiananmen and the towers of the CBD, this ordinary morning market reveals another side of Beijing—the city as experienced by the people who live here.
