In 1919, most bridge experts said the Golden Gate could not be spanned. Then voters in six counties put up their homes and farms as collateral, in the middle of the Great Depression, and the bridge opened in 1937 as the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world. This is how it was built: the fight to form a bridge district, the 1930 bond vote, the design that changed from a cantilever hybrid to a pure suspension bridge, the fender wall that let crews pour a tower pier in open water, the cables spun from 27,572 wires each, Strauss's safety net, the choice of International Orange, and the engineering that has kept it standing since.
