Beneath one of Australia’s most famous landmarks sits something rather less famous — a 115-year-old cast-iron public urinal. Installed at Observatory Park in 1911 and later moved to George Street in The Rocks, this ornate little structure has survived while almost all others like it disappeared. In this episode of James Carlton Explores, I take a closer look at Sydney’s last surviving cast-iron pissoir, why these unusual public conveniences were installed around the city, and the story behind this strange piece of Sydney history hiding beneath the Harbour Bridge approaches. And yes… I did try to look inside. If you enjoy Sydney history, hidden places and unusual stories, please like, subscribe and join me on the next journey.
