“Doctor, I delivered 9months ago and ever since then, I have been seeing my period. I'm scared. Could I be having cervical cancer?” This was a real concern shared by a mother in my comment section. And I understand why she was worried. When a woman notices repeated bleeding after childbirth, especially after reading about cervical cancer online, it is easy to start connecting the two. But before you panic, there is something important you need to understand: Postpartum bleeding, lochia and menstruation are not the same thing. After delivery, a woman normally experiences lochia for a period of time. Once that bleeding has stopped, menstruation can return at different times from one woman to another. Some women resume their periods relatively early, while others may go for months without menstruating. So if your postpartum bleeding stopped and your menstrual periods later returned, having your period after childbirth does not automatically mean you have cervical cancer. However, there is an important distinction between having regular menstrual cycles and bleeding continuously without a proper break. In this video, I explain: • How to distinguish lochia from menstruation • How early menstruation can return after childbirth • When postpartum or menstrual bleeding needs medical evaluation • Bleeding between periods and bleeding after sexual intercourse • Why abnormal bleeding should not automatically be labelled cervical cancer • Why cervical cancer screening remains important when you are due • When you should see your doctor or gynaecologist Please don't diagnose yourself from something you read online. And please don't ignore bleeding that is unusually heavy, prolonged, occurs between periods or after sex, or is associated with dizziness, fainting, weakness or other concerning symptoms. Be health-conscious, but don't live in fear. If you have experienced something similar, speak with your doctor and describe exactly what your bleeding pattern has been like. Please share this video with another mother who may need this information.
