ARLES: Inside Les Arènes, the Roman Amphitheatre That Became a Town

In this second episode from Anton's study trip to Arles, Provence, he visits the Espace Van Gogh, the Musée départemental Arles antique, the Arènes d'Arles and the Museon Arlaten. He begins at the former Hôtel-Dieu, where Van Gogh was treated in 1888 and 1889. At the Musée départemental Arles antique: the colossal Auguste from the antique theatre, the barge raised from the Rhône with its cargo intact, and the copy of the Vénus d'Arles, found in 1651 and handed to Louis XIV in 1683 for the Galerie des Glaces. The original can be seen at the Louvre. Then the Roman amphitheatre, built around 90 AD under Domitien and inspired by the Colosseum. By the Middle Ages more than two hundred houses and two chapels stood inside it — a walled town within a monument, cleared from 1825. His final stop is the Museon Arlaten, founded by Frédéric Mistral to preserve Provençal life.
