WordPerfect Had 10 Million Users Then Microsoft Took Over

More than 10 million users. $150 million in the bank. No debt. That was WordPerfect — shortly before it began losing the word-processing market to Microsoft Word. It started with a university marching band conductor, a computer science professor and a basement in Orem, Utah. A struggling curtain seller joined for $5 an hour and helped turn WordPerfect into the defining word processor of the DOS era. Users memorized its keyboard commands, trusted Reveal Codes, and called a toll-free support line where live "hold jockeys" played music and read ski reports. But WordPerfect treated that loyalty as proof that it still had time. Microsoft invited the company to beta-test Windows 3.0 — and WordPerfect stayed focused on OS/2. Its Windows version arrived about a year and a half late, with bugs and missed deadlines. One analyst joked it could still ship on time if June had 75 days. Then Microsoft put Word, Excel and PowerPoint in one box.
