Every episode starts as a stack of research notes and sources long before any narration is recorded. Tonight’s story begins on 21 April 1820, when a compass needle twitched beside an electric current and electricity and magnetism started to look like one force. From there we follow how the count of nature’s forces has changed: Pauli’s letter about a particle no one could see, Fermi’s theory that a journal turned down, and the 1983 discovery of the W and Z bosons at CERN. Later we sit with the physicists still watching a tank of more than 20,000 tonnes of water for a proton that refuses to decay, and look at fifth-force candidates like the X17 anomaly. Physics counts four forces for now. This is the story of why, and of how scientists are testing whether that number will hold.
