Chambered in 5.45x39, it remains a dependable companion for stalkers making their first trips beyond the Cordon. Its rugged construction handles mud, rain, and neglect with little complaint, while retaining support for UBGL attachments when extra firepower is needed. To keep costs down, many Loners purchase aged AK-74s from black-market stockpiles. These rifles often wear weathered gray wooden furniture instead of the more desirable reddish varnished sets, but function just as well. Most owners fit a surplus military sling for easier carrying and install custom rear-sight Picatinny adapters, allowing the use of Western optics rather than traditional Warsaw-pattern dovetail mounts."
