Exploring Holy Island at Low Tide – Pilgrims Way & Priory Ruins (Part 1)

A peaceful early evening visit to Holy Island (Lindisfarne). In Part 1 I cross the causeway at low tide, photograph the Pilgrims Way posts from Chare End, walk through the quiet village, and explore the exterior of Lindisfarne Priory in warm evening light. Most visitors had already left, giving the island that rare calm between tides. Part 2 will feature my walk to Steele End and a glorious telephoto view of Lindisfarne Castle. Founded in AD 635 by Saint Aidan, Lindisfarne Priory became one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Britain. It was home to the monks who created the Lindisfarne Gospels—one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval art. The priory’s life ended abruptly in the 1530s during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. The monks were expelled, the buildings stripped, and the great religious community dissolved.
