A Dentist After Midnight. A Book on the Bathroom Floor. Two Death RULINGS: Elvis Presley Officially, Elvis Presley died of a heart problem at home in Memphis, on August 16, 1977, at forty-two. That is what the county medical examiner told reporters the same evening. But the pathologists in the same room did not agree with him, and a grand jury would later count the pills. The last night at Graceland began in a dentist's chair after midnight and ended with a racquetball game at dawn. A little after nine, he told his fiancée he would not fall asleep in the bathroom. For five hours, nobody opened the door. Two weeks earlier, three fired bodyguards had published a book about the drugs. Within two months, his body was moved out of the city cemetery. And the doctor who wrote the prescriptions walked out of court acquitted on every count. It began with a thin book about the burial cloth of Jesus.
