In October 1947, Lutheran circuit pastor Matthew Corwin was called to the infirmary at a remote Olympic Peninsula logging camp. The dying patient was enormous, covered in dark hair, and kept repeating the motion of pulling a bell rope.
Corwin believed it had heard the camp chapel mark a logger's funeral earlier that day—and wanted the same acknowledgment after its own death. The superintendent ordered him to keep the bell silent. Corwin rang it once.
For nearly fifty years, he never explained publicly what happened next. But after certain unattended funerals, he continued to ring one bell. Then his daughter found a dated note inside his pocket Bible.
This episode follows Corwin's account, the ordinary explanations, and the one detail that kept his interpretation alive.
