What’s it like to live where school only gets canceled below −50°C? Oymyakon, a village of about 500 people in Yakutia, Russia, is the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth. The average January temperature is −46°C, and the official record is −67.7°C. Cars are left running all night so they’ll start in the morning. Toilets are outside. In December there are only about three hours of daylight. In this episode, you’ll spend a winter morning in Oymyakon. You’ll find out what people eat when nothing grows, why a single boiler plant keeps the whole village alive, why smoke from a chimney can mean life or death, and why people stay in a place where even ink freezes. The characters in this story are composites. The village, the temperatures and the numbers are real. 💬 What would you bring with you to Oymyakon?
