NEVER Pull the Battery When Your Smoke Alarm Chirps — Do This Instead

If your smoke alarm beeping at night woke you up, mija, do not pull the battery. Leave it in, test the alarm from the floor, and get the battery changed in the morning. NFPA says nearly three out of five people who died in a home fire were in a home with no smoke alarm, or with one that did not sound, and that the most common reason an alarm did not sound was the power: a battery missing, taken out, or dead. They also write that even careful people may disable an alarm that starts chirping in the middle of the night. That is the whole reason for this video: a smoke alarm beeping in the dark is the moment people make the one mistake that matters. Tonight I show you what a smoke alarm beeping once every thirty or sixty seconds is actually asking for, why an alarm can still chirp with a brand-new battery in it, how I test an alarm on the ceiling with the end of a broom handle while both feet stay on the floor, and the date printed on the back that almost nobody reads. We also go through the two kinds of alarms: the one with a battery you replace every year, and the sealed ten-year one you never open.
