In 1761, a French ship wrecked on a reef in the Indian Ocean. The crew built a boat from the wreckage and sailed away—leaving dozens of enslaved Malagasy men, women, and children behind with a promise to return. Help would not reach them for fifteen years. Tromelin was a low strip of sand and coral with no trees, no rivers, and nowhere to shelter from the sun. How did the people left there find water, feed themselves, and survive the cyclones that swept across their island? This documentary follows the full story: the illegal voyage of the Utile, the wreck, the decision to abandon the survivors, their extraordinary resourcefulness, and the rescue of seven women and an eight-month-old baby in 1776. Drawing on historical accounts and archaeological discoveries, we explore the stone homes, repeatedly repaired copper bowls, handmade tools, and traces of daily life that reveal how a forgotten community endured. Their names were largely lost. What they built tells part of their story.
