People Buy Wolf-Dog Hybrids Thinking They Are Getting a Cool Dog — They Are Not

It looks like a dog, lives in your house like a dog, and was sold to you as a dog — but the moment it reaches sexual maturity it begins behaving like something its owner was completely unprepared for. The wolf-dog hybrid is not a breed. It is a genetic spectrum caught between two worlds, and thousands of them are surrendered to shelters every year by people who did not understand what they were bringing home. In this episode we look at what wolf-dog hybrids reveal about the domestication process, why the behavioral gap between wolves and dogs cannot be closed by upbringing alone, and what happens to the thousands of hybrids that end up in a system designed for neither wolves nor dogs. We also look at what studying these animals in controlled research settings has taught scientists about which traits of the domestic dog are genuinely genetic and which are simply learned.
