Chapter 10 of PMF IAS General Science – Biology explains how living organisms coordinate different organs and respond to internal and external stimuli. The chapter brings together neural and hormonal regulation and is important for understanding Human Physiology and Plant Biology from a Civil Services examination perspective.
The chapter begins with neural control and coordination, introducing neurons and the organisation of the nervous system. The human nervous system is studied through the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, with emphasis on the brain, spinal cord and transmission of nerve impulses.
The chapter develops the concepts of sensory reception, neural communication and reflex responses, helping explain how the body detects stimuli and produces appropriate responses. Important sensory systems, including vision and hearing, are also considered from their biological and physiological perspectives.
The second major section focuses on chemical coordination and integration through hormones. Endocrine glands and their hormones are discussed with emphasis on how they regulate metabolism, growth, development, stress responses, reproduction and internal balance.
Important endocrine glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, adrenal glands and pancreas are covered along with their major hormones and physiological roles. The chapter also discusses selected hormonal disorders and the consequences of hormonal imbalance.
The plant section introduces plant hormones and their role in growth, development and responses to environmental stimuli. Auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins and abscisic acid are discussed in relation to plant growth and development.
Overall, this chapter explains the two major regulatory systems of the body, neural and endocrine coordination, while also connecting hormonal regulation with plant growth and responses.
