As mistress of the household she was, by every account in the record, respected in the district and well liked by her servants — a conventional gentlewoman of her class. When she fell ill that May and was lost, the quiet respectability of the house at first shielded what had occurred from the notice of the neighbourhood. Only later did the matter pass to the Royal Irish Constabulary, the coroner, and the Munster Winter Assizes at Cork, where it became one of the notable cases of its year before slipping almost entirely from memory.
