When I was 10 I remember hearing Pulp on the radio in the school bus to swimming class, and announcing to my friend Frank "I saw this band at a festival last year" at which he bluntly responded "no you didn't". I was absolutely determined I was right, though in fact it was him who was correct as they did no live performances that year, and what I saw was a band covering Pulp; this was at Green Man 2013, which was the first ever music festival I went to, and going there had quite a big impact on me. 13 years from then I can finally correctly say to my friend that I did in fact see Pulp at a festival - the song I heard covered at Green Man 2013 was Disco 2000, which, ironically was not played at this show, which doesn't bother me as they played quite the multitude of other excellent songs. I am still close friends with Frank, whom is known on the internet as @lost_and_kinda_dumb , he mentioned my channel to his internet followers the other day so I shall return the favour, as he is a very wonderful comic artist, whose playful wit from this here Northern England isn't unfamiliar with fans of Pulp.
This isn't the greatest sounding recording I have made, I was quite far away from the stage and you can hear some inevitable festival chatter, but this performance is notable (and brilliant) enough that any recording, no matter how echoey and distant, is satisfactory. It did prove somewhat polarising, as throughout the rest of the festival I would hear many opinions in passing, from people 'actually really loving it', being completely baffled at the first hour, the constant asking why didn't they play Disco 2000 (occasionally interspersed with other songs wished for the setlist, such as the Mis-Shapes, E's and Wizz and even His n Hers - and as a side note I was hoping for "Seconds") or saying it was a good performance but not appropriate for a festival headline set, where there would be mainly casual fans. It was ambitious and got people talking, which was very much a positive, a very lovely celebration of a close-to 50 year body of work as a band.
The 'cover' shows (to the left) a poster I have on my bedroom wall (which my Mum decided to entirely repaint and buy me a new bed on a whim whilst I was as End of the Road), from a show promoted by the "Return Club" in 1991 in Halifax at "North Bridge Leisure Centre" whilst Pulp were on the rise; my Mum went as her boyfriend at the time "Sonic Kersh" was DJing. She often recalls that, during this show, as Jarvis walked onto stage, he saw saw my Mum near the front of the crowd, and immediately had to rush off stage to change his outfit as my Mum had upstaged him by wearing a patchwork leather jacket, which he was also wearing. The poster to the right, also from "The Return Club" in Halifax at The Piece Hall, my Mum did not go to, and is clearly just superimposed from the internet, but remarkably it happened on Saturday 5th September 1992, which is exactly 34 years before their show at End of the Road, on Saturday 5th September 2026. That is quite the unfathomable coincidence, considering there have only been 5 Saturday 5th Septembers in all 12000ish days since 1992, I feel not to mention that 5th September is actually my brother's birthday. You can look up the setlist for that 5th September 1992 show, and they played Babies (a month before it's release), Razzmatazz (a month before it's studio recording) and OU, and all three of those songs were played at this show.
