We often call working people "牛马" — literally "oxen and horses" — a Chinese slang term for those who bear heavy workloads, low pay, and the relentless pressure of life.
Their days are carved up by work. By the time they get home, dusk has already fallen — and if they want to eat well, their only option is to eat by day and cook by night.
Fortunately, home appliances now lend a hand. A single rice cooker can double-boil, or schedule a soup to simmer… With just a little more preparation, our three daily meals can take on far more variety.
Soup, simmered overnight:
Green bean and pork trotter soup
Yam, corn, and pork bone soup
Marinated overnight:
"Cold-drunk" chicken roll marinated in Huadiao wine
A tipsy nightcap:
Jasmine black tea plum wine
