1986-87 marked the formative years of MTV’s 120 Minutes, a period when the show had not yet settled into a clearly defined version of “alternative rock.” At this stage, it functioned less as a curated genre showcase and more as MTV’s late-night space for videos that didn’t fit into regular rotation: an evolving mix of post-punk, college rock, industrial, synth-pop, hardcore punk, and underground alternative music.
In other words, 120 Minutes was still figuring out what it was.
Rather than reflecting a unified “alternative” scene, the playlist during these years reveals a fragmented but creatively rich landscape. Established post-punk and new wave acts like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, and XTC appeared alongside artists such as Hüsker Dü, Skinny Puppy, Bad Brains, Wire, The Go-Betweens, and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The result is a snapshot of “alternative rock” before it solidified as a commercial category and before MTV itself fully understood how this programming block would evolve. These years capture the messy, transitional space where underground music, college radio, and emerging visual culture overlapped on national television.
