Top 50 Most Played Songs on MTV’s 120 Minutes (1999)

1999 marked the year 120 Minutes began to lose its identity. The show was often pre-empted -- especially in the summer -- for “Real World” and “Road Rules” marathons and other MTV original programming. When it did air, 120 Minutes increasingly functioned as a promotional vehicle for major artists rather than a home for new underground music. One episode was devoted entirely to the Radiohead documentary "Meeting People Is Easy," while another featured a full hour of live performances from Robbie Williams, a former boy-band star trying to rebrand himself as a serious solo act. Longtime host Matt Pinfield saw the writing on the wall and departed for the short-lived USA Network music show Farmclub.com. Still, 120 Minutes in 1999 did manage to showcase fresh alternative videos from artists like blink-182, Beastie Boys, Korn, The Chemical Brothers, R.E.M., Jimmy Eat World, Björk, Everlast, Silverchair, Blur, The Cranberries, and more. This video is based on original research and analysis of 1999 airplay data from the MTV show 120 Minutes. Each entry features original background design, animated album art, and song, artist and album data, all compiled, analyzed, and edited by Feedback and Distortion.
