By the early 2000s the British GT Championship was in trouble. The GT1 monsters that made its name had priced themselves out of existence, the grid had fragmented into a confusing mess of classes, and entries were falling. A championship that once hosted McLaren F1 GTRs and Lister Storms was quietly running out of road. This is the story of how it nearly went under, and the decisions that saved it, SRO arriving as promoter, the arrival of GT3, and the choice to drop the expensive top class altogether.
