A hidden stairway beneath Hebron leads to a sealed room, two buried caves, human bones, and four clay vessels—and the real story is stranger than treasure.
I follow the 1981 discovery beneath the Hall of Isaac, from the secret midnight work to the air current that revealed a cave within a cave. I also explore what Michal saw years earlier and what Noam Arnon and the other volunteers found below the floor.
Then I examine the scientific study that dated the vessels to the time of the kings of Judah, what petrography and neutron activation analysis revealed about their clay, and what the finds may tell us about memory, pilgrimage, Abraham, and Sarah. The bones remain untested, leaving one mystery unresolved.
