Story Behind The Song “Have Thine Own Way” by Adelaide Pollard (1862-1934) Ms. Pollard had long been burdened with a desire to serve as a missionary to Africa, but was unable to raise the funds needed to get there. Experiencing great stress and worry over the matter, she attended a prayer meeting where she heard an older lady pray, “It doesn’t really matter what you do with us, Lord, just have your own way with our lives.” Convicted to look at circumstances from the perspective that God is the potter, who desires us to be pliable clay in His hands, Adelaide learned to trust God with life’s situations. She worked for many years training missionaries, and later spent time ministering in Africa and Scotland. She returned home after World War 1 feeble and frail in health, yet she wouldn’t give up giving for others. She died at age 72 on the way to assist in more evangelistic meetings.
