How Did Humans Learn to Make Fire on Demand?

Humans were using fire long before we know they could reliably make it. But evidence from Barnham in Suffolk, England may push deliberate fire-making back to around 400,000 years ago. Archaeologists found a remarkable combination of clues: repeatedly heated sediments, fire-damaged flint, and fragments of iron pyrite — a mineral that can produce sparks when used with flint. That does not mean Barnham was definitely where humans invented fire-making. The technology may be much older. But the site may preserve one of the earliest surviving windows into the moment when fire stopped being something humans simply found and became something they could deliberately produce.
