Healthy aging isn't just about strength, nutrition, exercise, and mobility. The environment around you matters too.
In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey House is joined by Fee Gentry, a former physical therapist, entrepreneur, and owner of Handled Home Solutions, to talk about aging in place, fall prevention, home safety, mobility, and maintaining independence as we get older.
Your home can either support your independence or quietly create challenges that make everyday activities more difficult and potentially less safe. The good news is that preparing for the future doesn't have to mean preparing for decline.
Fee brings more than 35 years of entrepreneurial experience and a background that includes physical therapy, post-rehabilitation, real estate, and coding. Together, Lindsey and Fee explore how proactive changes to our homes, movement, and daily habits can help us stay active and engaged in the life we want to live.
In this episode, we explore:
→ Why healthy aging involves more than nutrition and exercise
→ What it really means to age in place
→ Why fall prevention and home safety matter for long-term independence
→ Common fall risks that may be hiding in your home
→ Why waiting until after a fall or hospitalization can make planning more difficult
→ How strength, mobility, balance, and confidence work together
→ Why being able to get down on the floor and back up is an important everyday skill
→ What women in their 40s and 50s can start thinking about now
→ Simple home changes that can improve safety without making your home feel institutional
→ How families can talk about home safety and independence with aging parents
→ Why proactive planning can make future caregiving conversations easier
→ How to prepare for the future without living in fear of it
→ The “Grandparent Test” and thinking about what you want to be able to do at 70, 80, or 90
🏡 The Grandparent Test
Instead of focusing only on the number on your birthday, ask yourself:
What do I want to be able to do at 70, 80, or 90?
Do you want to travel? Walk through an airport confidently? Carry your own luggage? Get up from a chair without assistance? Get down on the floor and play with your grandchildren? Move around your own home with confidence and independence?
These everyday abilities can be easy to take for granted—until they become difficult.
That's why preparing for healthy aging today can help create more opportunities for independence and participation in the future.
💡 We're Not Preparing for a Smaller Life
One of the biggest ideas from this conversation is that preparing for aging doesn't have to mean preparing for decline.
Strength, mobility, balance, nutrition, and home safety can all be part of creating more freedom, more independence, and more opportunities to participate in the life you've worked so hard to build.
More travel.
More family time.
More adventures.
More independence.
More “yes” moments.
And maybe that's what healthy aging is really about.
💭 A question to think about:
What is one thing you can do today to make your future life a little easier, safer, or more independent?
