Energy Flow in Ecosystems - Food Chains and Food Webs

Why do ecosystems need so many plants? In this lesson for high school students, we consider how energy is transferred through ecosystems. The initial energy for an ecosystem always begins with the sun. Plants and other producers turn the sun’s energy into chemical energy. When producers are eaten, this chemical energy begins its journey through the food chain. However, not all of the chemical energy made by the plants will be passed to the next trophic level, as much of the energy is used by the plant itself. This is why it takes a large number of producers to support the consumers in an ecosystem. This lesson is from MiaPrep's Environmental Science course.
