Your refrigerator is the only machine in your house that never gets to rest. The washer works an hour and stops. The oven works on Sunday. The refrigerator has been running since the day you plugged it in, every hour of every night, and it is the only appliance that takes your groceries down with it when it goes. So it matters more than the rest which one you brought home.
I fixed appliances in other people's homes for thirty years. In this video I name the three refrigerator brands I would not put in my own kitchen, and the four I would, and I show you exactly where every verdict comes from.
Let me be straight about what this is and what it is not. I did not run a test. I have no laboratory and I did not cut open forty refrigerators in a warehouse. What I have is two sets of published numbers anybody can go read, reliability data from Consumer Reports and first-year service-call data from Yale Appliance, plus three decades of standing in kitchens with the back panel off. Every source is linked below so you can check me.
A word about the title, too. You will see videos promising a refrigerator that lasts twenty years or more. I will not promise you that, because the numbers do not support it. The Department of Energy puts a refrigerator's life at ten to eighteen years, with the middle right around twelve. The ones that ran for twenty-five years were built before refrigerators had circuit boards in them. Twelve years and up is the honest target now, and that is exactly where these brands separate.
Inside you will also find the brand that is quietly moving in the wrong direction and is not on either list, why the shape of a refrigerator predicts its life better than the badge does, and the reason the screen on a smart refrigerator dies less than halfway through the life of the machine it is bolted to.
And I go back and finish something. In my washing machine video I told you the compressor lawsuit people bring up was about refrigerators, not washers. This video is about refrigerators, so I lay out that whole history, the part of it that is genuinely good news for buyers, and the one sentence you should make a salesman put in writing.
One honest word. Avoid does not mean dangerous and it does not mean every one of them fails. It means the published record is worse than what else your money can buy. Somebody out there is running a twelve year old Samsung with no trouble at all. I am telling you where the odds sit, not predicting your machine.
Nothing good should ever be wasted. Not the machine in your kitchen, and not the knowing of how to keep it.
