A young governess arrives at Bly, a remote English country house, to care for two orphaned children - and becomes convinced the place is haunted by the ghosts of her predecessor and a valet. Henry James published the novella in 1898, and readers have argued ever since about whether the ghosts are real or the governess is imagining them. It remains one of the most debated ghost stories ever written. Read this next: the novella itself - short, and far more unsettling than any summary suggests. Free on Project Gutenberg. Next time on the show: a house on the Yorkshire moors, and a love that refuses to stay buried. Wuthering Heights. The Gideon and Gabrielle Show opens the dark academia library one life at a time.
