Setting Up Ladder on Roof Plus Roof Safety Purpose: To ensure the safe and effective setup of ladders on a roof and to promote proper roof safety practices. ________________________________________ Required Tools and Materials: • Extension ladder • Ladder stabilizer • Step ladder (if needed) ________________________________________ Procedure: 1. Preparation: o Ensure the ladder is unloaded from the van.  If not, refer to the Removing Ladder from Van procedure. o Plan the location where the ladder will be set up.  Look for lower roofs, flatter sections, or angles that allow for easier and safer access. 2. Inspecting the Ladder Stabilizer: o Ensure the stabilizer is attached to the ladder. o Check the wingnuts to ensure they are tight and secure. o Grab and shake the stabilizer to confirm it is properly fixed. 3. Positioning the Ladder: o Carry the ladder by the middle rungs, ensuring no obstacles are in your path. o Once at the desired location, place the ladder on the ground vertically with the feet flat. o If the ground is uneven, look for another access point o Ensure the ladder feet are both facing down and flat against the ground. 4. Placing the Ladder Against the Roof: o Carefully lower the ladder down so that the stabilizer arms rest securely on the roof.  Avoid placing the stabilizer too high or letting the ladder hit the gutters. o Adjust the ladder as needed to ensure the stabilizers are flat and secure. 5. Testing the Ladder: o Step on the bottom rung to test for stability.  Ensure the ladder does not wobble or slip. 6. Climbing the Ladder: o Ascend the ladder carefully and slowly. o Step off onto the roof cautiously, ensuring your footing is secure on the roof's surface. 7. Roof Safety Practices: o Shift your weight onto the lower foot while keeping the upper foot angled toward the roof slope. o Use roof corners, ridges, or flatter sections to maintain balance and ease of movement. o If working on a sloped roof, stay aware of the incline and avoid sharp movements. 8. Returning to the Ladder: o Approach the ladder carefully, ensuring it is still secure. o Shimmy the ladder gently to confirm it will not slip or move. o Face away from the ladder while on the roof and prepare to dismount:  Place one hand on the roof for balance.  Lift one leg over the ladder, placing it securely on a rung.  Follow with the other leg, ensuring both feet are stable on the ladder. o Use your hands to push off the roof gently and begin descending the ladder. ________________________________________ Safety Considerations: • Always inspect the ladder and stabilizer before use. • Ensure the ground and roof surfaces are free of hazards such as wet spots, debris, or loose materials. • Avoid sudden movements on the roof to maintain balance. • If unsure about safety or setup, call a coworker for assistance. ________________________________________ Tips for Optimal Results: • Position the ladder at a 75-degree angle to ensure stability. • Use a harness or safety line if required by company policy or roof conditions. • Check weather conditions to avoid working on slippery roofs. • Regularly inspect ladders and stabilizers for damage or wear.
