What would make a young family in China drive 110 kilometers just to go grocery shopping? Once a month, my family makes the long drive to Pang Dong Lai(DL Supermarket), one of the most famous and highly regarded supermarket brands in China. My wife Shan, our four-month-old baby Guo, my mom, and I drove about 110 KM for around 90 minutes to stock up on food and household essentials for the month. We picked up fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, snacks, drinks, personal care products, and other things we need for our home. We also stopped by the camera store to check out some filming gear, and of course, we had to take a break to feed our baby along the way. By the end of the day, we spent 2,090 RMB — about $311 USD. Life has changed a lot for me since becoming a father. My income is lower than it used to be, so we try to spend carefully while still making food quality, health, and family life a priority. This is what a monthly grocery trip looks like for our family in a small city in China. Welcome to Bao's Simple Life.
