Owing to congestion ahead and a crew getting low on time under the hours of service, it was decided by the CSX powers that be to back M641 up onto the Medaryville Industrial Track at Monon, IN. Monon was once the crossroads of the Monon Railroad. The track now known as the Monticello Industrial Track was once the line from Monon to Indianapolis. The track now known as the Medaryville Industrial Track was once their line to Michigan City, IN. But I digress. The M641 crew backed the train up the Medaryville IT north of town in Monon to clear the crossings and secured it there then brought the power back to the old depot and secured them. I arrived at Monon as the U416 crew was getting ready to back up the Medaryville IT to the train. They had already received their EC-1 movement authority and lined the switch from the industrial track to the Monon Subdivision main track. They went up and tied onto their train while I set up for their departure. When they pulled down to the connection switch to depart, the conductor dropped off to restore the switch to normal and then hopped into the waiting van for his ride up to head end so the train could depart. Using the van avoids the delay of having to walk the 96 car train up to the head end. And since this was the van that brought the crew up from Lafayette, it only made sense to hold the cab for this purpose. There is a method to the madness. After the train cleared I quickly knocked down and loaded up my gear and high tailed it to Chalmers, some thirteen miles south of Monon and was able to set up just in time to catch the U416 coming at close to track speed for your viewing pleasure. Once the train reached Lafayette, did their work and departed with a new crew, it was resymboled as the X641-17 for the remainder of its trip to Indianapolis. Thanks for reading and watching.
