Discover the foundations of Wujiquan staff training with Dr. Astin of the Institute of Martial Arts and Sciences (IMAS). This introduction explores walking staff position and four foundational drills: Fan Front, Figure Eight, Center Switch, and Center Switch Overhead. Our walking staff is proportioned to the individual practitioner: just over four shin lengths, reaching just above brow height. The shin/tibia provides the reference unit for our movement map, grounding practice in each student’s unique body proportions. In our training approach, brow height provides a useful reference within the visual field; the top of the head is typically less fully represented in this visually informed neural map. Staff practice develops awareness of the implement’s position and reach relative to the body, supporting accurate movement and striking without continually watching the staff. The tapered staff is selected from a young sapling that survived a forest fire, naturally hardened by the fire while still alive. One end is heavier than the other, allowing us to explore a central principle: learning to use gravity to assist movement and accelerate the staff. Rather than muscling the staff through each drill, students learn to position, guide, and redirect it, allowing gravity and its unequal weight to assist acceleration. Coordinated footwork, balance, timing, and whole-body movement bring these actions together. Using the same individual movement map throughout practice helps connect drills with application. We learn and train like we fight—developing a felt understanding of position, distance, and reach that supports action without relying exclusively on the eyes. Within Wujiquan, staff training contributes to the development of the integrated generalist: cultivating perception, coordination, adaptability, and purposeful control.
