Hormuz: The Year the World's Oil Chokepoint Broke | WORLDRIFT Twenty-one miles of water. Before 2026, about a fifth of the world's oil sailed through it every day. Then the United States and Israel went to war with Iran — and the Strait of Hormuz broke. Oil made its biggest monthly jump on record, 20,000 sailors were trapped at sea, a "dual blockade" locked the Gulf, and the world learned to go around the strait. This is how it happened, who paid, and who profited.
