In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Avignon TGV to Carpentras, a scenic Provence journey in 4K/60 frames per second. Avignon TGV station, opened on 10 June 2001 on the LGV Méditerranée high-speed line, sits approximately 3 km south of Avignon city centre and is identifiable by its 340 m glazed roof. From this TGV hub, a short link line connects south to Avignon Centre station, where the journey transitions from the high-speed network onto regional infrastructure. Leaving Avignon Centre heading north, the train joins the historic PLM mainline — the old Paris–Lyon–Marseille corridor dating from 1855, now used principally for freight and regional services — before branching off at Sorgues–Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here the AGC bi-mode unit switches from 1500 V DC overhead power to diesel, departing the catenary behind and continuing northeast along the Sorgues–Carpentras branch. This branch line measures 16.5 km and carries an hourly TER service. Intermediate stops at Entraigues-sur-la-Sorgue and Monteux mark the passage through the flat agricultural plain of the Comtat Venaissin, with the A7 motorway visible to the west. The line closed for passenger traffic in 1938 and only reopened after renovation in 2015, a gap of 77 years. That long interruption gives the branch a quietly restored character, and Carpentras station — once also a junction on the former Orange-to-L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue line — now functions as a terminus. The journey moves from one of France's flagship high-speed stations to a modestly revived rural halt, the contrast between the two ends of the route defining its particular interest.
