Paul Creston - Celebration Overture Op. 61

Commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman for the American Bandmasters Association; Premiered by the University of Michigan conducted by the composer at the 1955 ABA convention. It is the third work for band by Paul Creston and is in three sections. The first section (Con spirito) is a march in 3/4 like the polonaise except that the rhythmic pattern at measure 9, after the short introduction - is an irregular-overlapping pattering (2+3+3+2+2) covering 2 measures. The second section (Andante) is a pastoralte with the main lyric theme being allotted to the oboe, flute and euphonium in turn, and after a minor climax leading to the third section (Allegro giusto).
