Is Indonesia Really Heading for Another 1998?

Indonesia's stock market has crashed, and the comparison with 1998 is everywhere. But a falling market is not the same thing as a financial crisis. This investigation inspects the five bridges that carried damage through the economy in 1998: currency mismatch, funding, reserves, capital flows and trust in the rules. It uses Bank Indonesia's latest figures, MSCI's consultation on standalone status, and archive footage of the 1997–98 bank runs to ask what the evidence can and cannot show yet.
