In 1933, Germany was broke. Its foreign reserves were nearly gone, millions were unemployed, and the country was still weighed down by the debts of the First World War. Yet within a few years, Hitler had built one of the largest war machines in history.
So where did the money come from?
This documentary follows the money behind Nazi rearmament. We look at Hjalmar Schacht and the secret MEFO bills that hid military spending off the books, the Four Year Plan that pushed Germany toward self-sufficiency, and the price ordinary Germans paid through controlled wages, rationing, and forced savings. Then we follow the darker side of the story: the wealth stolen from Jewish families, the gold seized from conquered countries, and how the regime's economy came to depend on plunder to keep going.
It is a story about how a bankrupt state paid for a war it could not afford, and who was ultimately made to pay the bill.
