People do not always engage with workplace learning simply because they lack motivation. This lesson explores how psychological, historical and practical barriers can shape participation in self-directed learning. You will examine how low confidence, fear of failure and limiting beliefs may arise from previous experiences, and how coaching, mentoring, supportive management and a safe learning environment can help people try again. The lesson also introduces growth reframing, strengths-based goals and regular feedback to make progress visible. It then considers the workplace conditions that enable learning, including fair access to resources, mobile and offline options, protected development time and learning integrated into everyday work. Project debriefs, team retrospectives and just-in-time resources can all turn normal work into useful learning opportunities. The key message is that effective support combines compassion with practical strategy. People are more likely to engage when they feel safe, capable and supported, with achievable goals and space to learn within the flow of work.
