When you hear the word "betrayal," you probably picture a movie scene: a dark room, music building, and then the knife comes out. In the Hebrew Bible, betrayal is almost never a twist ending. It's slow, it's quiet, and it comes from the one person you trusted enough to turn your back to. The most common Hebrew word for betray is bagad. It's spelled with the exact same three letters as beged, the word for garment or cloak. Betrayal is the cloak over the knife: warmth on the outside, something cold hidden underneath. In this video we go through: David's cry in Psalm 55: "It was not an enemy... but it was thou, a man mine equal" The Hebrew words bagad and ma'al, and Achan's hidden treasure Why a covenant is not a contract, and what it meant to "cut a covenant" Malachi, Hosea buying back Gomer, and a God who knows betrayal from the inside Judas at the Last Supper, Jesus washing the feet that would betray Him, and the kiss in Gethsemane The difference between Peter's weakness and Judas's bagad What forgiveness is, what it is not, and why it's different from reconciliation The veil torn from top to bottom, and the covenant God keeps even when we tear it If you've been betrayed by a spouse, a friend, a business partner or a church, this is for you. What happened to you was real. But betrayal doesn't get to write the last chapter of your life. If this hit you somewhere, share your story in the comments. I read them. Subscribe for more deep dives into the Hebrew and Greek behind words we think we understand. And if someone you know is going through a betrayal right now, send them this video. 00:00 What we picture when we hear "betrayal" 00:45 How the ancient Hebrews talked about betrayal 01:28 "He sat at my table": a friend's 20-year betrayal 02:12 Psalm 55: "It was not an enemy" 03:18 The Hebrew word "bagad" 04:01 Bagad and beged: betrayal and the garment 05:09 The cloak over the knife 06:35 Ma'al: betraying something sacred (Achan) 07:52 Betrayal is not a mistake 08:45 Contract vs. covenant 10:15 Cutting a covenant in blood 11:00 Life in an ancient Israelite village 12:14 Malachi 2: "the wife of your covenant" 14:10 The biggest victim of betrayal in the Bible 15:30 Hosea and Gomer: buying back an unfaithful wife 16:52 Why idolatry is adultery 17:19 Baal, the rain god, and covering your bases 18:58 The last night: Jesus and the twelve 19:22 Jesus washes the feet of His betrayer 20:31 "He that eateth bread with me" 20:55 Ahithophel: David's traitor 21:27 Gethsemane and the kiss of Judas 23:00 Peter's denial 23:29 Weakness vs. bagad: Peter and Judas 25:00 If you've been betrayed 25:26 Church hurt 26:02 The Bible doesn't do toxic positivity 27:39 What forgiveness is NOT 28:50 What forgiveness really is 29:22 How my buddy finally let it go 30:04 Betrayed, denied, abandoned 30:27 The veil torn from top to bottom 31:36 A covenant that can't be betrayed from His side 32:07 If you've been betrayed, hear this 32:45 Share your story #Betrayal #HebrewWords #BibleStudy #Judas #Forgiveness #ChristianYouTube #Faith
